PasteNote Privacy Policy

Overview

Thank you for using PasteNote (the "App"). We take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy explains how the App handles your information.

In short: the App does not collect, upload, or sell any of your personal data. Your data is stored only on your own device by default.

The App is developed by CoderChan ("we," "us," or the "Developer").

Data We Process

The App's core purpose is to manage your clipboard history and pin content as desktop sticky notes. To do this, the App processes the following locally on your device:

• Clipboard content: text, links, file references, and images you copy. The App reads these from the system clipboard to display them in history and to re-paste them.
• Note content: items you choose to pin as desktop sticky notes.
• Image text and QR code recognition results: the App uses on-device recognition capabilities (OCR / barcode detection) to process images you save, extracting text and QR/barcode content for display and search.
• Sequential Paste runtime information: after you explicitly start Sequential Paste and grant Input Monitoring, the App locally processes event information such as key codes, modifier keys, and key-down/key-up states to recognize ordinary Command-V and track the current item and count. Temporary ordering and execution progress are not preserved across app restarts or synced through iCloud. Related diagnostic logging is described in System Permissions.
• Favorites and settings: favorites, folders, and preferences you create (e.g., shortcuts, maximum history size, privacy and recording controls — see Privacy and Recording Controls).

By default, all of this data is stored locally on your device. If you enable iCloud sync as described in Where Data Is Stored, persistent content such as clipboard history and notes is additionally synced to your own iCloud account; Sequential Paste runtime state and its diagnostic logs are excluded — either way, it is never sent to the Developer or any third-party server.

Privacy and Recording Controls

The App provides the following tools to help you control what gets recorded:

• Copied content that password managers and similar apps mark as concealed, content from apps you specify, and content from App Workspaces with auto-lock enabled are locked automatically; you can also manually mark an item as sensitive.
• Pause clipboard recording with one tap.
• Add specific apps to an ignore list; copied content from those apps will not be recorded.

These settings, and their effects (e.g., which items were not recorded), are likewise stored only on your device.

Where Data Is Stored

• By default, all data is stored only on your device (using Apple's local database technology) and is never sent to the Developer or any third-party server.
• If you turn on "Sync with iCloud" in Preferences → General, the App uses Apple's CloudKit private database to sync your clipboard history, notes, and related settings across your own devices signed into the same Apple ID. This sync happens entirely within Apple's iCloud infrastructure — the Developer cannot access this data, and it never passes through the Developer's own servers. This feature is off by default and must be turned on manually.
• Turning "Sync with iCloud" off only stops future syncing; it does not automatically delete any copy already synced to iCloud. To remove that copy, go to System Settings → Apple Account → iCloud → Manage Account Storage and delete PasteNote's data there.
• When "Sync with iCloud" is on, the App registers for silent push notifications with Apple's push notification service (APNs) so your device can promptly fetch changes made in iCloud. These pushes display no notification banner or sound; the process is handled entirely by Apple and never passes through the Developer's servers.

Network Requests Made by the App

To display the title and thumbnail (link preview) of a URL you have copied to your clipboard history, the App sends a network request to that URL to retrieve its publicly available metadata (such as title and thumbnail). This request is directed only at the URL you copied; it does not include your clipboard, notes, or any other personal data, and is not sent to the Developer or to any third-party server other than the URL itself.

What We Do Not Collect

• We do not collect any data for analytics, advertising, or tracking.
• We do not require you to create an account or sign in.
• We do not integrate third-party advertising or user-tracking SDKs.
• We do not sell or share your data with third parties.

System Permissions

To function, the App may request the following system permissions, used solely for the corresponding features:

• Clipboard access: to record clipboard history and to write your selected item back to the clipboard.
• File access (security-scoped bookmarks): to preview and restore files you have copied; this access is granted by the system pasteboard.

Selecting a history item writes it back to the system clipboard for you to paste manually in the destination app. The App does not request or use Accessibility access or simulate paste keystrokes.

Optional Input Monitoring for Sequential Paste

• This permission recognizes and counts ordinary Command-V presses in other apps. After the configured count, the App writes the next item to the system clipboard. You perform the paste yourself; the App does not read the destination text field or determine whether the destination app actually pasted successfully.
• The App receives keyboard events and filters the key codes, modifier keys, and press/release states needed to recognize ordinary Command-V. It does not read or store the text you type, build a typed-text history, or upload keystroke information. The system permission itself is not limited to Command-V; the App uses the matching results only for this feature.
• Settings → Sequential Paste shows the purpose and the authorization status reported to the running process. Enabling the mode or starting a sequence without permission opens this settings page. The initial system permission request occurs only when you click Request Permission on that page. Restart PasteNote after changing system permission; the page may continue to show the previous status until restart. Declining permission does not prevent ordinary clipboard history, search, or manual copying. Granting access does not automatically start a sequence; you must start it yourself.
• You can stop the sequence from its control window or the folder menu, or revoke PasteNote's access in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring. Stopping removes the feature's keyboard listener. Once stopped, clicking End exits the mode, clears the temporary order, and closes the window without deleting clipboard history, folders, or notes. The sequence stops when it detects revoked permission or an interrupted listener, and does not automatically resume after reauthorization or restart.
• During a sequence, external copies are first handled under your existing privacy and recording rules, and the system clipboard is then restored to the current queued item. Stopping leaves the clipboard as it is, without restoring its pre-sequence contents. Pausing history recording does not stop Sequential Paste; stop the sequence if you do not want it to keep updating the clipboard.
• Local app and system logs contain diagnostic events such as listener status and recognition of a valid Command-V, but not text obtained through Input Monitoring. These diagnostic events are not uploaded by this feature or synced through iCloud. Stopping the feature or revoking permission does not erase existing local diagnostic logs.

Image text and QR code recognition uses on-device system capabilities and does not require an additional system permission.

Data Deletion

You can delete individual items, clear all clipboard history, or clear all notes within the App at any time. Deletions are permanent. Uninstalling the App removes locally stored data.

Children's Privacy

The App is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Effective Date" at the top and post the updated policy on this page. This revision (October 16, 2026) adds the optional Input Monitoring permission for Sequential Paste, event processing and local diagnostic logging, stop, end, and revocation controls, restart guidance after permission changes, and clipboard restoration during a sequence.
